"Rimbaud" by Louis Marcoussis, 1939

£250.00

An original engraving for XXe Siecle, 1939 from an edition of 1200 copies.

Louis Marcoussis (1878–1941) was born in Poland and moved to Paris in 1903. Here he became acquainted with the writers and painters who frequented the cafes of Montmartre and Montparnasee - Degas, Braque and Picasso. In the late 1930s he collaborated with Spanish surrealist Joan Miró, teaching him etching techniques which resulted in Miró’s renowned Black and Red Series.

The fly visible here in the bottom left is somewhat of a signature for Marcoussis - a 1937 painting entitled ‘La Grande Mouche’ also featuring a fly sold at Sotheby’s last year.

36.5cm x 52cm. Newly mounted and framed.
